Steer by criticism, Captain

images-1We are all captains of our ship and we sail by the stars and reading the sea that supports our trip. But what are the best signs and how can we quickly log our correct position on the chart. I would say look to the criticism and not to praise to find the reefs that would detour our journey or possible sink our ship.

Praises while pleasant, only flatter the captain and do not cause greater vigilance. While criticism from friend or foe, though painful, hides in the white water of our discontent the reefs that we must avoid.

If you find yourself defensive when attacks thunder and waves rock you, or you discount the criticism as misguided, then be sure that the helmsman is drunk and is playing the captains part while you sleep.

So take charge of you helm and read the currents of your day, taking special note of any irritations as a sign that you have gone astray. For on God’s good ocean, when you are in full command, there is nothing but calm seas and a bright sun to fill your day.
